Steve at Mode Engineers is great to deal with ! i contacted him recently for structural design on my loft conversion, i cant recommend him enough.

We’re yet to have our build done or quoted for, but if could give 6 stars for my experience so far, I would.

I approached Mode initially (having never used a structural engineer before) as we’re looking at taking down some walls in our house. I Googled firms in the local area and Mode seemed well reviewed so I got in touch. I’m really not surprised at their rating.

Right off the bat, Steve gave me a couple of options… 1. to take some measurements myself and send over to him with some info (cheaper) or 2. get an engineer out to carry out a survey (very reasonably priced).

Being fairly nervous (first house ‘renovation’) about getting it wrong, I opted for the latter. The pricing was clear, and the chap turned up and did a thorough measuring job/checked our joists etc. I really appreciated the option to bring the cost down though if that’s what I wanted to do.

Sure enough, calculations and drawings soon followed - complete gobbledegook to me, but the language Steve used in his emails, even I could understand enough (with just a tiny bit of Googling!) to ask questions where needed.

*5 months* later, we get a quote for some bifolds and I learn I’ve initially given the engineer (and therefore Steve) measurements that won’t work for the bifolds I actually want. 100% my fault.

I hesitantly email Steve, basically assuming it’s likely to be a new job to calculate according to the right measurements. Nope. Within a day, Steve has given me info on the new lintel I’d need and sent a new set of calculations through (giving assurance that my house wasn’t going to fall down, even though we’re likely to smash a hole much bigger than initially intended through the back wall). All for no extra charge.

As I say, we’re yet to get builders involved - but the service so far has completely surpassed my expectations and I’m genuinely excited about the art of the possible in my house.

An unreserved recommendation - I’ll look to update it once we get building work underway, but given Steve has already said on numerous occasions that if builders/building control need to contact him it’s no problem, I’m not anticipating any issues. Such a relief when it’s your family home…
